What it is

Not "a successful app." An app that becomes the reason the chain exists — that would drag its users to any chain it moved to. It generates demand rather than converting it. Almost nothing reaches this tier.

How you’d recognise it

The app's revenue is a material fraction of the entire chain's revenue. Users say the app's name, not the chain's.

Hyperliquid launched an exchange first and a chain second. It now handles roughly 70% of all on-chain perpetual futures volume, with 30-day volume above $180B — more than every other on-chain derivatives venue combined. It raised zero venture capital and airdropped 31% of supply to ~94,000 early users. It is the #1 chain by protocol fees, and its token ranks around #10 by market cap (~$16.1B). It did this while skipping almost the entire tech tree.
