Superapp

First-Party Superapp

The platform builds its own consumer front door. A harvester, never a generator.

What it is

The chain's own team ships a polished consumer app — social, wallet, trading, payments, all in one — to capture the users its ecosystem couldn't.

How you’d recognise it

The rebrand to "everything app." The launch video with the ambient piano.

Worked examples

Base App: the honest version

On 16 July 2025 Coinbase rebranded its wallet into the "Base App," an "everything app," pushing a social feed and creator coins on top of one of the largest distribution pipes in crypto. The social layer failed — CEO Brian Armstrong conceded "it didn’t quite work," and the app pivoted to trading. Read that carefully: given a user base Coinbase pegged at ~110M as far back as end-2022 (a metric it has since retired) and unlimited budget, the superapp’s only surviving surface was the demand sink that already existed. The superapp harvests demand. It cannot create it.

What it buys

Margin on demand you already had.

What it does NOT buy

Demand. There is no example of a first-party superapp creating a sink from nothing.

Verdict

The most expensive way to discover you needed a sink.
