How you’d recognise it
A slide reporting "400 projects built." Ask what happened to project #7. Nobody knows.
Hackathons are measured in submissions because submissions are the only thing they reliably produce. The honest metric — projects still operating with users twelve months later — is almost never reported, because reporting it would end the program. Spray-and-pray developer acquisition is a selection problem being solved with volume.
The rebuttal is always Solana — it runs the biggest hackathons in crypto, and still does. True. But look at the order. Solana already owned a sink, and its hackathon (Colosseum) exists to feed an accelerator that points winners at a demand engine — the same concentrate-then-manufacture path that produced pump.fun. That is the tell: a hackathon is a funnel, and a funnel needs somewhere to send people. Bolted onto a sink, it compounds. Pointed at a chain that has none, the same weekends produce the same dead repos.
What it buys
A recruiting funnel. Genuine goodwill. Content. A top-of-funnel for an accelerator that has somewhere to aim.
What it does NOT buy
Companies, on its own. A foundation that mistakes the funnel for the outcome — that runs the weekends without a sink or an accelerator to catch the output — will fund a thousand of them and zero sinks.
DEAD as a substitute for demand — alive as a funnel on top of one. Solana proves the funnel; nobody has proved the substitute.
