consensus or contrarian. know which race you're in
There are two kinds of markets and they need completely different founders.
A consensus market is one everyone already knows is going to be big. Stocks on chain. Agent databases. LLM cost optimisation. You don’t have to explain the TAM. The only question is who wins, and the answer is money and speed. Not speed in features. Speed in growth. You need a ton of money to spend on growth and you need to spend it crazily. You’re racing. Every week two more competitors appear because the opportunity is obvious.
A contrarian market is one people think is stupid. Polymarket seven years ago. Why would anyone bet on elections permissionlessly? For four years nobody copied it because nobody believed it. That gave Shayne time. The moment the election happened it became consensus and now he needs two billion dollars to defend it. That’s a good problem to have. pump.fun was the same. People shat on it for months. Nobody copies something that looks dumb until it works.
So figure out which one you’re in before you pick a strategy.
In a consensus market, build the thinnest slice, capture the narrative first, and go get money. “Everyone’s going to be a liquidity provider (LP) someday” is a narrative. Own it before the second guy shows up, so when he goes to raise, every VC asks him how he’s different from you. That question stops him. You don’t have that problem.
In a contrarian market, you have time. Do the right thing. Build properly. But you also need to survive being called an idiot for years, so the commitment test matters more.
The mistake I see most is a founder treating a consensus market like a contrarian one. Building features in private for six months while the market gets taken. A borrow-against-stocks product has a half life of three to six months right now. If you’re not the biggest dog in six months, the wallets will build it themselves. So stop coding and go sell.
the call where i said it best
A founder of a lending protocol asked me: revenue first, or go raise? I told him it’s a false dichotomy in a consensus market. You need revenue to raise. And you need to raise because speed is the whole game. Two factories paying today, 20,000 factories in the deck. That’s the easiest sell in the world and it’s also the only one that works now. Pre-revenue valuations are gone.
do this this week
Ask ten people if your idea is stupid. If they all say no, you’re in a consensus market. Stop building and start growing.
the line to remember
in a consensus market, what matters is money and speed. and speed is not in features, speed is in growth.
