68. Moats for Deep-Tech Startups
Deep-tech companies need layers of business protection beyond a single patent.

A patent grants claims, not commercial value or automatic enforcement. Strong portfolios cost money to draft and defend, while a large competitor may route around weak claims or outlast a startup in court. Deep-tech therefore needs the same non-technical moats available elsewhere: distribution, exclusive contracts, regulation, brand, funding, safety history, and a culture of continuous innovation.
Ask what a well-funded rival would still find hard to copy once the invention and its market are obvious. Combine patents into a funded portfolio where appropriate, but layer them with customer access and institutional advantages. The moat is the whole system of deterrents, not the certificate on the wall.
