cold start lesson

win fifty design partners by hand

target about fifty design partners through direct outreach, then turn them into paying customers.

what to do

For a product sold to teams, go after roughly 50 design partners by hand. Calls, personal emails, meeting people in person. Skip mass marketing at this stage. Give those partners real input into the roadmap, then convert them to paying once the product earns it.

for example

A founder I spoke with in 2026 was about to run broad marketing for a product that needed deep trust. I pointed them at direct outreach instead: build a short list of serious teams, reach each one personally, and treat the first fifty as design partners. Direct outreach closed the people that ads would never have reached.

the failure it prevents

A pile of sign-ups from a campaign, none of whom will get on a call or pay. You look busy and learn nothing about what the product needs to become.

when this doesn’t apply

Low-ticket consumer products live on a channel. This approach is for products where one customer is worth a lot and trust takes a conversation.
