48. Your North Star Should Predict Profit
Track customer value today to understand financial results tomorrow.

Revenue and profit describe the past. A useful north-star metric measures value customers are receiving now and has a demonstrated relationship with retention and future economics. Signups and generic activity are often too shallow; the signal usually sits downstream at the behavior that makes the product worth keeping.
Identify an action or outcome that represents real customer value, then validate it against churn, expansion, or lifetime revenue. Segment customers by the metric and test whether higher values predict better financial results. Once validated, organize product work around moving that leading indicator.
